OPTIMIZING YOUR STORY OF SELF
“you have a running story about yourself. choose one optimized for success.”
The Lesson
Hypothesis: you have something like a story of yourself always running, who you are now and what you're likely to become. You can choose which story to have. This mental process drives decisions (you may not be aware of it), and more speculatively, may directly cause changes to your body through chemicals, relaxation, and stress reduction. If you get your self-story right, one optimized for health and success, you'll do better. Example: aging. If your story is 'I'm getting old and declining,' you will. If your story is 'I'm in the best shape of my life for my age,' your decisions and possibly your biology follow.
Real-World Example
A founder's default self-story: 'I'm an imposter who got lucky.' They consciously rewrite it: 'I'm someone who spots opportunities others miss and executes relentlessly.' Same facts, different story. The new story makes them pitch more confidently, take bigger swings, and recover faster from setbacks. Their decisions change. Possibly their stress hormones change too. The story becomes self-fulfilling.
